Three interconnected initiatives addressing freshwater ecosystem health at scale.
Our primary initiative targets the bowfin and other invasive freshwater species devastating native fish populations across Florida and the Southeast. We are developing a smart fish passage and selective removal system that uses underwater sensors and AI-powered species recognition to identify and remove invasive fish while allowing native species to pass safely through water infrastructure.
The system integrates real-time computer vision, automated mechanical removal, and data reporting — creating a scalable, low-labor solution for water managers, municipalities, and conservation agencies.
A citizen science progressive web app (PWA) that puts AI-powered fish identification in the hands of anglers, students, and conservationists. Users can photograph catches in the field — with or without a cell signal — and receive instant species identification, invasive species alerts, and reporting tools that feed data directly to conservation databases.
The app includes bilingual support, offline capability, and an educational layer connecting users to local water health data. It also serves as the primary public interface for our AI classifier, currently training on 44 freshwater species classes.
In parallel with our biological management systems, Recovery Earth is exploring next-generation water filtration technology designed for natural waterways and aquatic corridors. This initiative focuses on low-footprint, ecologically compatible filtration that can be deployed alongside our fish passage infrastructure.
This technology is currently in early research and development. We anticipate piloting concepts alongside our invasive species removal deployments in future phases.
At the core of every Recovery Earth system is a purpose-built AI platform trained on aquatic ecosystems. Our computer vision models identify species in real-world conditions — murky water, partial views, varying light — and integrate with automated hardware to turn identification into action.
These intelligent systems allow real-time understanding of ecosystems and help governments, water managers, and organizations respond faster to environmental change — replacing slow, costly manual surveys with continuous automated monitoring.
Our companion nonprofit — education, community outreach, and conservation programs powered by the same AI tools.
Foundation programs include Fish AI education for K–12 schools, invasive species removal events, freshwater mussel conservation, and citizen waterway cleanups — with a focus on Title I and underserved communities across Florida.
